I didn’t really sign up for doodling lessons to learn from an Art teacher per se. Rather I got two books for reference so that I can improve my doodling skills.
One is “Illustration School: Let’s Draw Happy People” by Sachiko Umoto. This book is recommended by Muffin Girl and I just have to buy it after seeing snippets of the book. I really like the simplicity of Sachiko Umoto’s style, on how she can draw complex characters into simpler forms, a great reference for human characters! And despite being doodles, they bring much joy and happiness to readers, something which I hope to achieve with my doodles.
I was most fortunate to be able to get the 2nd last copy in the book store. Well there are only 2 copies on the shelves so maybe there were more in stock. I just want to feel lucky. 🙂
She has other books too, like “Illustration School: Let’s Draw Plants and Small Creatures” and “Illustration School: Let’s draw Cute Animals” which I am tempted to buy. Maybe in the later part of the year.
The other book, “Just Draw it!” by Sam Piyasena & Beverly Philp is like a mini drawing course, with a series of exercises to practise. I got it for a while but didn’t try out the exercises until today cause I have been trying to meet the deadlines for my projects. What I like about this book is how structured it is and how it exposes readers to different art styles which is very beneficial for someone like me who has never attended the proper art school. The exercise I did today is to sketch a drawing of a boxer that is upside down which is something totally new to me. This exercise is to help me rid myself of preconceived ideas of how the drawing should look like and focus solely on my observation of what is there.
Here are the pictures of the book covers and the doodles I did following the books in just paper and pencil. No digital art at all! Gosh, I feel so exposed and vulnerable without Adobe Illustrator to clean up my lines.
